I tested my 4 smoke alarms today.  It made me think about whether or not they’d really work.  I’m asleep–they make noise–I wake up–I see my house on fire–I run out into the sub-freezing cold–I watch my house burn down–I think about all of the things I should have saved–I go to my neighbor’s house in my underwear–I call my insurance company.  Six months later I’m still trying to settle with the insurance company and living at the Holiday Inn Express.  I guess they worked.
